Beach Drive Neighbors Organizing to Control Raccoon Over-Population

UPDATE MAY 17, 2011: THE TRAPPING FOR THIS WEEK HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

A number of Beach Drive neighbors are interested in dealing with an over-population of raccoons encouraged by intentional and unintentional feeding by some neighbors.  There is a flyer that is being distributed to neighbors that states "if you feed them, you are responsible for their death".   

The flyer states that raccoons "are now getting into homes, destroying our yards and our food gardens, getting into our garbage cans, KILLING our pet cats...even worse, raccoons are spreading disease, including viruses, bacteria, rabies and parasites like roundworms..."   The group is investigating having the raccoons trapped and killed until the population is reduced to "one that nature can support" before it becomes an even larger issue. Apparently trapping and relocating raccoons is not an option per Washington State law.

UPDATE:  PLEASE KEEP YOUR PETS INDOORS SO THAT THEY ARE NOT ACCIDENTALLY TRAPPED.  

NOTE:  Beach Drive Blog is not organizing the raccoon trapping - simply reporting info as we learn about it.

It's very considerate of the neighbors to have given BDB a "heads up" about this so we are all more aware of this issue and know to keep our pets in.  None of the neighbors who are in this position want to be.

Friday's Beautiful Sunset is Dedicated to my Dad

I'm sorry I haven't been posting much lately.   My Dad passed away on Friday afternoon.  My sisters and I were on our deck watching the sunset when a dozen red roses tied in a gold bow appeared. 

 

 

The moment after the sun set, the phone rang and it was a nurse telling us that our Dad had peacefully passed away.   Dad was 64 and had been battling various health issues including progressive lymphoma (skin cancer).

Rest in Peace, Dad.

 

 

I love this time of year and posting photos of homes that are decorated to celebrate the season, friends and family.   Please email me photos of Beach Drive neighborhood homes decked out for the holidays and I will get them posted.

Beach Drive has potential Hi-Yu royality, Miss Kelsey Porter!   Kelsey is a 2010 West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court Candidate representing the West Seattle Kiwanis Club.

An Adventure to Alaska began from the Shores Off Beach Drive

Yesterday, West Seattle Blog reported on an adventure that launched from the shores of Emma Schmitz Viewpoint.  You can read the full article here.

Garden Cycles in MeeKwaMooks

Yesterday, while chatting with Suky, a Beach Drive neighbor, we noticed a bicyclist peddling through the grass at MeeKwaMooks towing a cart.  At the time, we weren't sure what he was up to.  Suky decided to investigate.

Come to find out, the bicyclist is Steve Richmond of Garden Cycles who has a contract with Seattle's Urban Forestly program to remove invasive plants including Japanese knotweed (a.k.a. polygonum).

New Small Beach Drive Resident!

  Hi- we wanted to post a pic of Beach Drive's newer residents!

Rocco Antonio Quilici was  born to parents Chad & Kristen on 10/27/07 and weighed in at 8lbs 12ozs.

He can be seen strolling along Beach Drive on nice days!

Happy HOLLY-days

One neighbors major pruning can be another neighbors holiday arrangement.   The Burkholders, owners of Screamer Hats (we could all wear a Screamer Hat today--brrrr) say the neighbors are welcome to prune some holly from their downed holly tree.    You'll find this tree near the south end of Emma Schmitz Memorial Viewpoint.
