During a jog up Jacobson hill this morning, I ran into a city crew trying to decide what to do about the leaning alder they had just cut down. It just so happens that the hollowed out Alder laying on the ground is home of a swarming bees nest.
One of the crew informed me that a local bee keeper has been contacted for their expertise and over-heard other options to move the infested log to an unpopulated corner of MeeKwaMooks or Lincoln Park. You've been warned!
Last Thursday, there were at least two seal pups taking advantage of a sunny afternoon in parks along Beach Drive.
This pup was at the foot of the rocks at the north point of Emma Schmitz Memorial Viewpoint. Seal Sitters was on the scene advising volunteers how to protect the young pup.
You get an idea of how small this seal is by seeing it next to the Seagull (and check out what the Seagull has).

Just a few blocks away at Constellation Park, another young seal was sunning itself on the rocks.

The representative from Seal Sitters told me there were four known pups on West Seattle beaches at that moment. A neighbor notified us that some people left garbage at Mee Kwa Mooks Park last night and told me that this has been happening often recently. We live in such a beautiful area and it's sad that some people can be so thoughtless.
By the time I reached the park, a gentleman from Seattle Parks Department was cleaning up. It appears the whoever did this left behind playing cards and even a cloth tablecloth and consumed a few beers.
On my way to capture the photo of the mystery sign, I noticed that someone has been up to stacking rocks at Emma Schmitz again.
Wondering if any of our readers know what's up with this sign that's at the far north end (heading towards Alki) of Emma Schmitz/Mee Kwa Mooks park?
Update April 21, 2011: this tip was just provided by a Beach Drive neighbor via the West Seattle Herald:
Through a grant of $99,916 from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Feet First worked with nine neighborhood districts to support a kiosk and wayfinding project, holding community meetings to seek input.
In addition to our wonderful sunny weather, we will have very low tides this weekend.

As you're beach combing along Emma Schmitz, Charles Richey, and areas of Lincoln Park, remember these are designated marine preserves or Marine Protected Areas. Nothing is to be removed from these coastal areas, including shells or sea critters. Download MarineAreaRules (see page 19).
Beach areas in front of homes are often private and have varying property lines from property to property. Some homes may own the beach out to mean low tide. There's no way for the public to know where private property begins or ends--just something to keep in mind.
This afternoon, we found a group of high school students on a field trip with the Seattle Aquarium at the Emma Schmitz Memorial Park to study to marine preserve.
Along Beach Drive, we actually have two marine preserves: Emma Schmitz and Charles Ritchey.
Today from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, you can join the Seattle Parks Department in celebrating Earth Day by cleaning up the beach area at Lincoln Park. As the sign posted on the telephone pole says, bring a picnic and meet at Shelter #5 by the beach where you'll be joined by Camp Long staff.
