The best Fish & Chips in Beach Drive history?

Every now and then we run into people that remember a great little restaurant located just down the street on Beach Drive and Jacobsen. I've always wondered what the house looked like back in it's "eatery" days but haven't been able to locate any photos... until now! These pics were recently scanned by the Seattle Municipal Archives Photograph Collection from a folder containing an appealed variance application back in 1961.

If you'd like to learn a little more history about this quaint 12 table restaurant, West Seattle Blog posted a fabulous article along with reader's memories of the restaurant's owner/chef that had recently passed away. I also hear that Quesnel's is mentioned in the book Memories of Southwest Businesses that can be found at the Log House Museum off of Alki.

My next quest for photos is to get some choice shots of Sans Souci, the old Schmitz mansion that used to adourn what is now Mee-Kwa-Mooks. If you have any leads on photos, please share!

Only a Few More Weekends to Tour the Alki Light House

The Alki Light House is open for tours every weekend from 1:00 - 4:00 pm until Labor Day.

It's an amazing bit of Seattle history and a beautiful place to visit.  Established in 1887, the current tower was first lit in 1913, the lighthouse will be celebrating her 100th birthday in a couple years!

PS: the tours are FREE!

Alki Homestead Community Rally and Picnic on the Fourth of July

From the Log House Museum website:

"The Southwest Seattle Historical Society has organized a mass photo event to take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday July 4, in front of Fir Lodge, the 106 year old log structure that many have known for decades as the Alki Homestead restaurant.  The building was damaged by a January 9 fire and since then has sat vacant..."

 

"This event takes place after the Southwest Seattle Historical Society's annual membership picnic, which begins at noon at the Homestead's original carriage house, now the log house museum.  The public is invited to join the society and come to the picnic".

At the membership picnic, hamburgers and hot dogs with the fixings will be provided--you're encouraged to bring a dish to share.  

Satterlee House to Keep it's Historic Lawn

West Seattle Blog reports that the Satterlee House, also known as the Painted Lady of Beach Drive, will not have new homes on the front lawn anytime soon.   The State Supreme Court has rejected builder and owner, William Conner's request to build three "mini-mansions" in front of the historic home.  You can read WSB's coverage of this fight that has gone on for over two years here.

That Restaurant at Beach Drive and Jacobson: Quesnels

Quesnel's Restaurant definately is piece of Beach Drive History.  Sadly we moved here after it's existance...but we're often asked about what happened to the restuarant and many have shared fond memories.

West Seattle Blog writes about this with the recent passing of Neal Shaffer, who ran the restaurant for many years along with the Shack Drive In.

What was a restaurant is now private residences at 4703 Beach Drive SW.  

 

 
The owne of these properties 4703 (the large beige triplex, former restaurant) and 4701, the smaller home has been doing a major remodel of the residence at 4701.
