Don't Forget to Stamp Out Hunger

Today's the day to leave canned goods for your mail carrier to pick up in the blue plastic bags they gave out last week for their annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign.

Please help me! I'm going to be locked up at Angelina's to raise funds for MDA!

I'm scheduled to be "locked up" to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on April 7, 2011 at Angelina's Trattoria in West Seattle. 

While I have no idea who the special person was who nominated me to this event, I do know that I'm tasked to raise $2,000 to help King County families.

Alki Homestead Community Rally and Picnic on the Fourth of July

From the Log House Museum website:

"The Southwest Seattle Historical Society has organized a mass photo event to take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday July 4, in front of Fir Lodge, the 106 year old log structure that many have known for decades as the Alki Homestead restaurant.  The building was damaged by a January 9 fire and since then has sat vacant..."

 

"This event takes place after the Southwest Seattle Historical Society's annual membership picnic, which begins at noon at the Homestead's original carriage house, now the log house museum.  The public is invited to join the society and come to the picnic".

At the membership picnic, hamburgers and hot dogs with the fixings will be provided--you're encouraged to bring a dish to share.  

Tour Alki on a Bike Tour this Sunday

The Southwest Seattle Historical Society (SWSHS) invites residents to bike into history as the 2nd Annual SWSHS Bike Tour returns to West Seattle Sunday, June 7, 2009, 12:30 to 2 p.m. The Bike Tour accompanies SWSHS’ popular Walking Tour series, showcasing some of West Seattle’s most influential landmarks. Beginning at the Log House Museum on Alki Beach, the Bike Tour is a casual 5-mile bike ride around the Duwamish Peninsula via Alki and Harbor Avenues and West Marginal Way. Featured sites on the route include the Log House Museum, the newly reconstructed Alki Statue of Liberty Plaza, Alki Beach, Anchor Park (formerly Luna Park) and the new Duwamish Longhouse on West Marginal Way. Admission to the Bike Tour is $7for non-members, $5 for museum members. Donations are accepted. The Log House Museum is located at 3003 61st Avenue SW, a half-block off Alki Avenue. Tuesday, June 2nd at 7 p.m. at the Log House Museum, Joan Hockaday talks on "The Olmsted Legacy in West Seattle" from her new book, Greenscapes,  Olmsted's Pacific Northwest (WSU Press 2009).  Hockaday is a gardener historian who researched the Schmitz family and West Seattle connection in the archives of the Log House Museum.  Frederick Law Olmsted traveled to Seattle to design the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and offered his advice to the Parks Board, including Federdinand Schmitz.

 

Event is free but donations are always gratefully accepted.

Learn at the Log House Museum

Tuesday, May 5th at 7 p.m. at the Log House Museum, Alan Stein and Paula Becker of HistoryLink will present a slide show and talk based on their forthcoming book, The Alaska/Yukon/Pacific Exposition.    One hundred years later, hear how Seattle celebrated its coming-of-age with a world's fair on the grounds of the University of Washington.

The event is free and your donations are welcome.

The Perfect Christmas Present: A Place on the Statue of Liberty Plaza

When we had the big Plaza Celebration Day on September 6th, about 50+ people had expressed their regrets for having missed out on getting a brick in the new Plaza.  With those requests, we knew there would be many more to come so we decided to open sales up again and create a Maintenance Fund that would be dedicated to maintaining this place at Alki Beach.

Well, to date, the numbers have proved that a correct assumption with 343 new bricks being sold, 5 Tribute Plaques being spoken for and so far raising approximately $45,000 in this new phase of fundraising.

Tribute Plaques:  This category was driven by a request from an old family friend (of Libby's) for a bench on the plaza to honor his son who had been killed by a drunk driver many years ago.  He thought this place with its views of all places his son loved would be a perfect place to remember him.  So, he wanted something special for that purpose.  Unfortunately, we were completely out of benches.

As an alternative, we thought up the idea of a Tribute Plaque.  Designer Matt Hutchins and Project Manager Patrick Donohue decided to place them in the concrete strip (poured in 15 sections) which borders the promenade on the water side entrance of the plaza.   My friend was quite satisfied with that solution to his request.

We have now only 10 plaques left to sell before December 31, 2008.  Please consider what a great gift this can be to honor loved ones or to express yourself and your love for Alki Beach.  The plaque is the same size as all other plaques in the plaza and is $2000.

Christmas Brick Special:  Back because of popular demand is the Christmas Brick Special == 3 bricks for the price of 2 with the basic price being $200 per brick.  So, you will get 3 bricks for $200 for this special.  Take advantage of this super Christmas present that will not disappoint, or disappear - ever, because it's case in concrete.

People were very creative in the first phase with what they had inscribed on their bricks.  Go to www.sealady.org, click on the MAP link and you will get a 33 page PDF file where you can read all 1503 inscriptions on laid on the plaza.  This will give you plenty inspiration and ideas on what you might put on your brick(s) in this final phase of brick sales.  Take advantage of this opportunity because at the end of this year, this sale will be over.   You have my word on that one!

Time Capsule:  This is your opportunity to literally become a part of Alki History.  The Log House Museum is collecting the writings, photos, objects and ideas for the new Time Capsule that will be placed in the plaza probably in April 2009. 

In talking with Andrea Mercado of the LHM, we thought it would be wonderful to have people write a short story (several paragraphs) telling people in the future about your life now here at Alki.  Why do you live here?  What are your values and just share your own life's story from the big picture to the mundane, albeit briefly.  Or maybe you have plenty of other ideas on what might be of interest to people 50 years in the future.  Remember, now is your chance to really be part of history.  Great pains will be taken to preserve the contents so water doesn't get in to destroy the contents.
